Global Warming Mug

I am a little tree hugger at heart. I am also a frequent tea-drinker, so I am forever fascinated by the variety of cups available. I don’t have that much room in my cupboard, so I have to filter them out a bit…
Today’s mug happily unites my two interests. The Global Warming Mug reacts to heat, so your liquid of choice will make the ocean spread across the continents as the ice caps melt and the water levels rise. Not the most optimistic way to start the day, I know. But it looks cool and some of us actually enjoy thinking about these things. We’re not there yet, so there’s still hope, right?
How much under $29.99?
Some: $10.95 on Amazon.com.

I wonder how toxic and harmful to the environment the chemicals that cause the mug to turn blue are. Also, it was probably made in China, who aren’t exactly the kindest people to the environment. Not to mention the detriments of global shipping…
Typical American thinking (I’m American too) that we should “increase awareness” by continuing consumption. If you really wanted to help the environment, you’d buy a mug at a thrift store for 50¢. Plus, it’d have the added benefit of helping charity.

Well, the way I see it, people are going to buy mugs either way. Some harmful, some not (I have no idea how this works). So, if they’re going to do it, why not get something to raise a little awareness? I am sure no one would actually turn eco-warrior just because of a mug, but someone might just think twice about throwing that paper in the trashcan.
I know that in an ideal world one would shop eco-consciously, but really, it’s not going to happen very soon.
(P.S. I am not American.)
