Protecting your digital camera should be the no. 1 priority when carrying it around – no camera means no photos, not to mention the cost of getting a new one. As someone who’s been looking for a good and pretty case for about 6 months, I can tell you most are impractical, expensive and/or plain boring.
The Hoodie is a very pleasant surprise: it looks sturdy, has a very cute stripey pattern and tightly hugs a compact camera to keep it safe from bumps and falls. As you can tell from the picture, it only fits small cameras unfortunately, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for your DSLR.
The case also comes with a stretchable internal pocket for various accessories like baterries and memory card, plus a wrist and belt strap to keep it close at all times. Each is unique, so you don’t get to choose your stripes…
Holiday photos can be tricky if you’re traveling alone. You either take pictures of the sights without you in them or depend on the kindness of strangers (and hope they won’t run off with the camera). A romantic getaway will yield the same results – solo pictures or those weird “I’m holding my hand out as much as I can, smile honey!” shots.
Next time you’re on vacation, take the QuikPod along. You’ll be much happier. This handheld camera mounting pole will let you take photos of yourself without assistance – ok, a weird stretched-out arm will still be in the picture, but at least you’ll capture more than your face since it’s almost 50 cm long (18.5″).
It comes with a mirror to help you make sure the camera is pointing in the right direction, and it’s small enough to carry around at 19 cm (7.5″). And better yet: it doubles as a regular tripod.
When you buy an iPhone, you don’t do it for the camera. Everyone knows it’s not great and most don’t expect wonders.
But since sometimes it’s simply so convenient to use, variousaccessories that enhance it have been popping up.
Macros aren’t something most people would set out to take with a phone, but if you find a use for it (such as photographing documents instead of carrying them around) the Clarifi iPhone Case with Macro Lens is a very convenient solution.
First off, it’s a case, so even if you end up using the macro function less than you’d expected, you get your money’s worth in the form of a non-bumped-against-walls phone. Second, the lens is built-in, so there’s no extra pieces to fall down and get lost: simply slide it into place to take close-up photos and slide it back for regular operation.
However, if you don’t see yourself needing a macro lens more than a handful of times, don’t bother with this. You can pick up a more interesting case for this money.
I can’t count the times I’ve tried to use a makeshift tripod. Balancing the camera on a friend’s shoulder or the back of a chair works sometimes and fails miserably at others.
There’s lots of people in the same situation, so the Bottle Cap Tripod is one of those “why didn’t they think of it earlier?!” products. It turns any regular water bottle into an instant tripod, so you’ll have a quick solution virtually anywhere. Even if you’re in the middle of a desert with no store in sight, you need to have some water with you.
Unless you’re planning to drink from springs and sleep under the stars, in which case a camera wouldn’t be the number one object on the “to take” list.
One of the things I wanted when I chose my camera was a swivel screen. Because it’s priceless when shooting over a crowd… and, let’s admit, because sometimes you might want to take a photo without being seen.
However, the numbers of camera with flip-out screens isn’t that big, and if you’re upgrading to a DSLR you’re not going to complain about such an unimportant detail. But it would be nifty to have, wouldn’t it? Well, if you’ve got a 3″ LCD screen, the Flipbac can be a simple solution to this problem, and unlike regular flip-out screens it works both in landscape and portrait modes.
Though it’s basically just a mirror with a frame, it’s difficult to explain how it works in a few words, but the video below demonstrates it perfectly.
Perhaps you won’t be thrilled by a foreign object stuck to your camera, but it will also protect the LCD while not in use. A 2.5″ version is planned too, but the date of launch is uncertain. How much under $29.99?
Some: $19.99 on Flipbac.com.
Out of the land of silly gizmos comes another one, and this is actually original. Incredibly, it’s not USB powered nor does it do 3 things in 1… but that doesn’t mean you actually need it.
The Cube Hot Shoe 3-Axis Bubble Level is supposed to help you keep the camera in an exact position for the perfect shot… somehow. Gee, how did all the poor photographers ever manage to do it until now? We can only wonder…
Oh yes: a tripod, an ounce of attention and/or their favorite editing program. And I’d guess they took great shots by looking at the subject, not the cube on top of their camera.
Anyone who’s ever tried to prop up a camera on a pile of rocks or a ledge knows that makeshift tripods don’t work so well. It might get the camera at the right height, but the picture will be tilted to a side – that is, if the camera doesn’t topple over to smash in a billion pieces.
So tripods are good; small tripods are particularly good for travel. The Gorillapod Go-Go and the Wrap/Micro Tripod Combo are two examples of inexpensive and handy accessories, and today there’s another one to be added to the family.
The Universal Pod comes with a new idea: why restrict yourself to horizontal surfaces? Its patented viscoelastic polymer base (no, I have no idea what it means either) lets the would-be photographer attach the camera virtually anywhere. Of course, restrictions apply: small cameras only, up to 15 oz. You won’t be able to use you DSLR with it, but the compact travel camera? Definitely.
