Dietary Needs of Small Breed Dogs
Many small breed dogs are very active and energetic. Due to higher metabolisms they require more calories per pound than larger breed puppies. They also require adequate levels of fiber to help regulate the absorption of glucose (sugars) from the digestive tract. (See chart below)
Small breed dogs are known to be more vulnerable to a condition known as hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Proper levels of fiber in the diet ensure a slow and steady absorption of glucose rather than all at once. The risk may increase if a puppy does not eat frequently during the day.

Due to small breed dogs having smaller mouths, all Wellness Small Breed recipes are a smaller kibble size for easier consumption and digestion.
Transitioning to Wellness Dog Food
It is important to slowly transition your dog from his/her current diet as it takes a few days for the body to adapt to the new nutrient levels. To transition, gradually mix in the new food over a 5-7 day period, increasing the amount of Wellness each day, so that you are feeding 100% Wellness by day 7.
