There’s no way to stop tacky gadgets from taking over the world. One day we’ll call a 3-in-1 USB hub and popcorn machine our master.
Or maybe, if something from the Egypt Series USB Drives takes control, we’ll be mummified wrapped in printer paper.
These drives comes in two models, Sphinx and Egyptian, and to call them ugly is an understatement. Even worse, they can be worn as a necklace, and fashion gurus everywhere are probably praying it will never happen.
They do come with a decent 2GB storage capacity, but $22 for this… no thank you.

I wonder what goes through designers’ heads when they make things like the Teddy Bear USB Drive?
“Hey, let’s make a novelty flash drive.”
“Oh yeah, let’s make it cute and fluffy, they’ll love it!”
“And for the finishing touch… decapitate it!”
So here it is. To plug the drive into an USB port you have to remove the bear’s head, which a bit creepy to say the least. Don’t leave it around young kids or they’ll end up in your bed crying from the nightmares.

While some people are busy making USB drives that look like animals, robots, food or even cigarette lighters, some are working to make them as small as possible. Some people only need storage and don’t feel like carrying around something unnecessarily large.
The 4GB DataTraveler Mini Slim from Kingston is perfect for such people. It’s just a drive; you store data on it and retrieve it when you need it. It’s very small, but it can be attached to a lanyward or a keychain to prevent it going missing, and there’s a choice of three color: black, blue and pink.
I’m not so sure about the contacts being so exposed, though. I don’t think it would have a long life if I shoved it in my pocket with the keys. Has anyone (ab)used a mini drive?

USB drives are undeniably useful… but why on Earth would someone buy a 256MB one?
The Robot USB Drive looks very good. It really does look like a robot, it’s metallic and shiny, can be attached to your keys… but it’s incredibly small and very expensive. All right, it’s made to be given away as a corporate gift, but still. I don’t think it’s worth it in the end, unless you have a big budget you have to spend.
It does get cheaper as you go… if you order over 2500 items you can get each for $16.85. You just need a lot of business partners. Or a huge conference.

I’d gone for too long without seeing an USB convergence gadget. It was long overdue. And it was there, waiting for me in the form of a cow skull.
It might sound bad, but it isn’t really. This Cow Skull USB Flash Drive Lighter isn’t suited for trendy girls or nerds, but for a tough guy? Sure. It has a lighter (because what’s a bad guy without a cigarette?) and 4GB of storage (because even bad boys live in the 21st century), plus an embossed skull.
(Also suited for Bon Jovi fans, since Jon has a tattoo of the same skull on his arm.)

I would’ve thought people would run out of ideas for USB drives by now… But no, they keep on coming in all sorts of new shapes and sizes. And some of them are quite cool, even compared to the hundreds of models already available.
One of the new additions is the Memorex Poker Chip Flash Drive, which I am sure could make a great gift for a poker lover. This 1GB USB drive is shaped like a poker chip, with most of the “chip” acting as a cap for the actual drive.
There’s not much to add since, except the shape, this is just like any other USB drive. Just remember not to store it in the same place as your real chips, you might have a hard time finding it again…
